Energy Bills Are Rising: Take Control With Solar and Battery Storage

Household energy bills look set to climb again in the new year. Analysts at Cornwall Insight expect the typical annual bill to reach £1,999 from January, around £276 more than households pay today and the sharpest jump in four years.

The forecast blames disrupted gas supplies and low storage levels across Europe, and warns that rebuilding those stocks could keep prices elevated well beyond the winter.

It follows the increase already applied under Ofgem’s October price cap, which added roughly £60 a year to a typical bill and took it to £1,723. Around 20 million homes in England, Scotland and Wales sit on variable tariffs set by that cap.

With energy prices this unpredictable, more homeowners are looking for ways to reduce the amount of electricity they need to buy from the grid in the first place.

Forecast figures from Cornwall Insight’s Default Tariff Cap Forecast, published 30 September 2026.

0% VAT on Solar Ends 31 March 2027

There is another important reason to consider solar now.

The current 0% VAT relief on qualifying residential solar panel and battery storage installations is scheduled to end on 31 March 2027, after which the VAT treatment is due to change.

For homeowners already considering solar, this creates an important window to explore your options and arrange installation while the current VAT relief remains available, subject to eligibility and applicable VAT rules.

How Solar and Battery Storage Cut Your Grid Electricity

A professionally designed solar panel and battery storage system can help you generate, store and use more of your own electricity.

Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours to power your home. Surplus energy can be stored in a home battery and used later, including during the evening when your panels are no longer generating.

With a suitable system and electricity tariff, your battery may also be charged using lower-cost off-peak electricity, giving you another way to manage your household energy costs.

Solar and Battery Storage Can Help You

  • Reduce the electricity you buy from the grid
  • Store surplus solar power in battery storage for use later
  • Make better use of cheaper off-peak tariffs
  • Reduce your exposure to future electricity price increases
  • Export eligible surplus electricity back to the grid
  • Take greater control of your household energy costs with solar and battery storage
